He was raised in a middle-class family.

Gajendra made his debut TV show appearance in Paying Guest in 1983.

After he graduated from AIIMS, Gajendra relocated to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting.

He has been a part of the administration of the Cinema and Television Artists Association for 20 years and even served as its president for a year in the past.

Gajendra was appointed as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2015. However, controversy and opposition by FTII students led to his resignation in October 2017.
