Annual May Day dip sees hundreds of students strip off and hit the water

Hundreds of students yesterday braved unseasonably cold waters for a traditional May Day plunge.

For decades, the University of St Andrews has marked The Dip, which is supposed to cleanse any academic sins and bring good luck in the imminent exams.

Some went for a skinny dip in the North Sea at the East Sands while those that couldn't face the cold looked after their friends' clothes on the beach.

Others got into Coronation party mode with Union flag swimsuits and crowns as they hit the water.
